This week, I was chatting with one of the companies we spend money with for advertising, a leading magazine and online community provider in South Africa. The guy who I was chatting to gets it. He is a smart dude.
I was telling him about how our suppliers are all telling us that this year, they don’t expect growth. In fact, they are urging us to grow into new lines and markets, just to maintain volume of sales. Retail, seemingly, is going to go through a tough patch in 2014.
If I have learned anything in my time on this rock we call home, it’s that the smartest worker, the hustler and the guy who can think outside the box when the proverbial hits the fan.
In 2014, we are looking at a year where the fans are hyperpowered and the food was laced with laxatives. It’s going to take a special effort this year to stand out but if you do, I am willing to put my chop on the block and say you’ll prosper like never before.
2014, the year of the hustle. If you’re only just realising this, know that it won’t happen overnight. Know that it’ll take more work than you have ever done and know you’ll have to tie it together with something properly sticky. Know that average is not going to cut it this year.
If we look at this definition of hustler then you’ll see the key things to know are:
– You will have to push.
– You will have to hurry.
– You will have to drive.
– You will have to be aggressive.
Beyond the slang, hustle is not a bad word. As with no much in popular culture, the slang has dominated from a good word.
Mark my words.
Year of the hustle.
